Sync Nextcloud with Android

DAVsky syncs the calendars, contacts and tasks of your Nextcloud with Android. Events show up in any calendar app, contacts in your phone's contacts app. ownCloud works the same way.

No ads • No trackers • Your server

What you need

  • The address of your Nextcloud, as you open it in the browser, for example cloud.example.com or example.com/nextcloud.
  • DAVsky from Google Play.

Setup (recommended: sign in with the browser)

  1. Open DAVsky and tap “Add account”.
  2. Choose “Nextcloud / ownCloud”.
  3. Under “Server address”, enter only the address. DAVsky adds the DAV path (/remote.php/dav) itself. An address copied from the browser, like https://cloud.example.com/index.php/apps/files, works too.
  4. Tap “Sign in with the browser”. Nextcloud opens in the browser.
  5. Sign in there (two-factor sign-in works too) and grant access.
  6. Return to DAVsky. Nextcloud has created an app password just for DAVsky; your account password is not stored on the phone.

You need to grant access in the browser within 20 minutes; otherwise start the sign-in again.

Alternative: username and app password

If you use two-factor sign-in, Nextcloud rejects your normal account password. Create an app password:

  1. In Nextcloud, tap your profile picture (top right) → “Settings” → “Security”.
  2. Under “Devices & sessions”, enter a name such as “DAVsky” and choose “Create new app password”.
  3. Enter your username and this app password in DAVsky. A copied password with spaces or hyphens can be pasted as is.

The username is your Nextcloud login name, not necessarily your email address or display name.

Common errors

“The server rejected these credentials.”

Usually two-factor sign-in is on and the account password was entered instead of an app password. Use “Sign in with the browser” or an app password. Also check that you entered your login name rather than your email address.

“This server doesn’t offer sign-in through the browser.”

Sign in with username and password; with two-factor sign-in, use an app password.

DAVsky finds no calendar or contacts service.

DAVsky shows which paths it checked. Enter the address you use to open Nextcloud in the browser, including the subfolder if Nextcloud is installed in one, for example example.com/nextcloud.

Certificate warning.

With a self-signed certificate, DAVsky shows you the certificate and you decide whether to trust it.

What gets synced

  • Calendars with reminders, attendees and recurrence.
  • Contacts. DAVsky stores groups the way the Nextcloud Contacts app does. The automatically created “Recently contacted” address book is not preselected.
  • Tasks via OpenTasks or Tasks.org.
  • Instant sync (optional): with the Nextcloud app “DAV Push” and a UnifiedPush app such as ntfy, Nextcloud reports changes right away; otherwise the sync interval applies.

FAQ

Do I need an app password for Nextcloud?
Only with two-factor sign-in, and not even then if you use “Sign in with the browser”: Nextcloud creates the app password itself.
Which address do I enter?
The one you use to open Nextcloud in the browser. DAVsky adds /remote.php/dav.
Does it work with ownCloud?
Yes, through the same “Nextcloud / ownCloud” entry.
